ADVICE FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN THERE
A high school sophomore shared these resolutions as she began her sophomore year:

“Here are my resolutions:
Say hello anytime I see an acquaintance.
Because I was always smiling and greeting the people I knew, people automatically assumed I was friendly (though I am not naturally sociable). And high school kids want to be friends with sociable people.
Take the first step.
All the girls there already knew each other - they didn't need another friend. But I did, so I had to make the effort. I had to be the first one to invite somebody to go with me to a movie, or over to my house. Once I did, they started to respond in kind.
Make friends slowly.
I couldn't get discouraged when it took a while to make friends. Hey, I had already waited an entire year, what's a couple more months? Making new friends is hard.
Use classes to get to know people.
I met most of my first friends because I sat next to them in class. Class (before, after, or even during class-time!) is a great opportunity to strike up a conversation, ask for homework help, or even better, to extend help when needed.
Hide my fear.
I was terrified coming back to school sophomore year. But acting confident really helped. First of all, acting confident actually made me confident. And second, confidence implies a lack of concern for other people's opinion, which paradoxically, makes others value your opinion more. High school kids are odd in that way.
Above all, remember that it can and will get better. You may have to work a little to make your high school experience a great one, but it's absolutely worth it! “

START THE YEAR OUT WELL!
Organization Tips:
· Keep track of assignments in your planner.  Don’t mark it up/color it so much that you can’t read the assignment blocksJ.
· Don't put off working on assignments…start reports and projects early.
· Have a specific place to study away from distractions.
· Organize your papers in a folder, notebook, or binder; keep your computer files neat and organized as well.
· Keep all your books and papers for the day in one spot by the door so you don't have to run around in the morning trying to find them.
· Eat a healthy breakfast!  It helps keep your brain organized.
How to deal with "G-Town"

What do I do if I would like to speak to Mrs. Berry?

Come to the Guidance Office and set up an appointment during your study, before school, after school, locker break, lunch or homeroom time.      Ms. Leppert or Ms. Steinke, the guidance office assistants will be happy to schedule a personal time just for you.

Why am I getting this appointment slip to come to Mrs. Berry's office?

I call ALL students in twice a year just to check in and see how you’re doing.  Please don’t panic if you get an appointment slip from “Mrs. Berry” in guidance.

What if I need help in a class?

Coming down to see me, your counselor, is a great idea if you are struggling in a class.  I can help you get organized and/or direct you to help within the school.  Also, I receive copies of progress report grades and will be meeting with you if it looks like you might be struggling in any of your classes.

What are the things that you have to report to our parents?

The law mandates that I notify your parents/guardians if you are ever a danger to yourself or others or if you are in any sort of dangerous situation.  Also, if you have been abused in some manner or if you have abused someone else, I would have to report that.  I also must report if I have knowledge that you have committed any felony crime.  These are the only times I am mandated to contact your parents/guardians.

Will you tell our teachers what we say in your office?

No, no, never, ever!  (unless you ask me to and in some cases this could be helpful to you).

What advice do you give to freshmen?

My best advice is to GET INVOLVED in at least one club or activity.  It is a great way to meet friends and feel a part of the Assumption community.
